Who is Icess?

About pageHello Reader,

I’m so glad you’ve stopped by the website to read and to get to know me a little bit.

I’m a writer, blogger, journalist and a teacher. I teach writing to college students in Houston, TX who want to do big and amazing things with their lives.

This blog is a letter to the readers who want to know what it’s like to be a writer and to live the life you’ve always wanted. I write about it all, the good, the bad, and the OMG.

Here’s a bit about my writing life thus far:

I’ve been a journalist for 12 years. I started my career at the Corpus Christi-Caller Times before social media and around the time that Blogger made its debut.

Through the years, I’ve written about fires, council meetings, school board members, colleges, shootings, and music. Not all in that order.

When this blog first started it was called something different.

And then this thing called blogging became, well, a thing. Then social media come into its own and I started exploring it. I love how one can communicate about who they are and about what they love with the help of a few key strokes. As a result, I’ve been used digital storytelling, was digital packaging editor, a social media coordinator, and a community manager for a website.

Awards? Yes, I’ve earned a couple. Some of the highlights include:

  • Honorable mention from the Dallas Press Club for a narrative story about how a group of Cubans survived their long escape to eventually wash up on the shores of Mustang Island. The same story was also recognized by the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors.
  • An award from the Kansas Press Association for a story about Latino Hip Hop gaining popularity in Wichita, KS. Remember that song Lean Like a Cholo? I interviewed that guy for the story.

As for writing, I graduated with an MFA in creative writing from Goddard College in 2012. I learned from writers Micheline Marcom and Amiee Liu. Since then, my fiction has appeared in Minerva Rising, the anthology Soul’s Road and soon on The Fem Lit Mag. My novel-in-progress, Lagniappe, was chosen by The Writer’s Hotel for its summer program. I’m a Voices of Our Nation Arts Foundation (VONA) 2015 alum and earned the Owl of Minerva Award from the Minerva Rising Literary Journal.

I’ve published commentary in the Guardian and The Huffington Post Latino Voices and All  Digitocracy.  Want to see more of my work? Check out part of my portfolio here.

I am working (promise) on the first book of my mystery series called the Jennie Manning Mysteries.

Wow, that’s a lot but that’s what it’s like to be a writer. Keep reading and you’ll see.

Thanks for stopping by,
